Church Government

prison Paul addressed the church in
Eph.
1:22-23
And He put
all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the
church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Each congregation of the church universal is to be governed by a “council of elders,” or “group of elders.” This group of elders is described in the New Testament by several synonyms as depicted in the following chart:

As you will notice, each one of these
synonyms is always in the plural and not in the singular. Therefore, in the New
Testament each church or congregation was autonomous, being ruled by Christ the
Chief Shepherd and his under shepherds—the body of elders: “Do not neglect
your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of
elders laid their hands on you.” (1 Timothy
