Facing the Future

The Bible declares that children are the heritage of the Lord: “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate” (Psalms. 127:3-5). Since God has rewarded us with children, the question is what are we going to do with them? Their future is largely in our hands. Our sons and daughters will either grow up to be mighty warriors for the Lord or willing agents for Satan. Bible education and training will make the difference.

Young Timothy was a valuable co-worker with the apostle Paul in establishing and strengthening congregations throughout the Roman Empire. Timothy had a bright future because he had been brought up by a godly mother and grandmother: “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5). We are informed that Timothy’s moral and spiritual education had been going on from infancy. Little children need to learn about God from the time they come into this world. If a child is not educated in the scriptures that child is not properly educated:

2 Timothy 3:14-17

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Because Timothy was educated and trained in biblical truth, he was a valuable worker in the kingdom of God. “But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel” (Philippians 2:22).

It is a tragedy that so many young people are neglected by their parents in bringing them to Sunday school. Every child is entitled to learn about God’s plan for man, so that when they grow up they will have a bright future here and hereafter. When we bring them to Sunday school, they also learn the value of worship and the fellowship of Christian association. They also can be a positive influence in bringing other children with them.

Fathers and mothers and children, do not neglect your responsibility:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:1-4).
