Proclaiming Christ

In Acts of Apostles the Bible says that Phillip began at the same Scripture and preached Jesus unto the Ethiopian noblemen (Acts 8:35). The place where the nobleman was reading was Isaiah 53: 7-8:

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

NIV

This is a very plain reference to the suffering and death of Christ.  From this point Philip brought the subject of conversion stated in the great commission and also the subject of baptism:

Acts 8:36-39

Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.  Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

NKJV

It is obvious that baptism for the forgiveness of sins is a part of preaching Christ to the people.  Jesus commanded it, the apostles proclaimed it and the people obeyed. Copyright © 2010 Shelby Floyd, All Rights Reserved
