God Is

For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. (Hebrews 3:4.)

Abraham Lincoln Believed in God

Abraham Lincoln once said, “I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he can look up into the heavens and say there is no God.” The evidence for the existence of God both in nature, and in the revelation of God’s word, is overwhelmingly in favor that God exists. The man, who rejects this great amount of evidence, is a fool. King David once said, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.” (Psalms l4: 1.) David also said,

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, which ís as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.” (Psalms 19:1-6.)

All the planets of the universe sing a song of evidence as they shine, and saying, “The hand that made us is divine.”

The Genesis Account Begins With God

There is no way to account for the origin of the world without God: and the oldest account of its origin says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and. the earth. (Genesis 1:1.) This is one of the most majestic statements in the entire Bible, and there has never been any theory that could equal this statement of inspiration concerning the creation of the universe. There is a law of nature that says, “Nothing comes from nothing.” The positive side of that statement would be, “something always comes from something.”

The Universe Did Not Come About By Blind Chance

Since the universe is here, it did not come about of itself. The creation of matter then demands that there had to be a creator behind it, and that creator is the God of the Bible. For it is the Bible only, that gives us a true account of how the universe came into being. For it is, “Through faith we understand the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” (Hebrew 11:3.) Also, the universe shows evidence for the existence of God in its great design, order and. intelligence. This evidence demands an intelligent and orderly designer. This designer is God.

There are certain people today who would attempt to reject God, and account for the world on the basis of blind chance. But, it would be just as reasonable to believe that, Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary resulted from an explosion in a print shop as to believe the world came about by blind chance.

The Divine Design of Water

One specific example of orderly design and intelligence in the creation is the substance known as water. Water is the only known substance which becomes lighter as it freezes. If it became heavier when frozen, it would sink to the bottom of the lakes, rivers and oceans, and would form a solid mass; thereby, destroying all marine life. But since water becomes lighter when it is frozen, it rises to the top, and forms a shield of insulation; thereby, protecting the marine life. This is just one of many examples of how God planned, purposed and designed everything in both the heavens and the earth. This could not have possibly been so by blind chance. And this only serves to show that, “Our universe seems to be more like a great thought than a great machine.”

One of the past presidents of the New York Academy of Science, A. Greasy Morrison, has said,

“The evidence is strongly suggestive of this directive purpose back of everything… We have found that the world is in the right place; That the crust is adjusted within ten feet, and that if the ocean were a few feet deeper, we would have no oxygen or vegetation. We have found that the earth rotates in twenty-four hours, and that were this revolution delayed, life would be impossible. If the speed of the earth around the sun were increased or decreased unilaterally, this history of life, if any, would be entirely different…. We find that the gases of the atmosphere are adjusted to each other, and that a slight change would be fatal…. Considering the bulk of the earth, its place in space, and capacity of adjustment, the chances of some of these adjustments occurring, is in the order of one to a million: and the chances of all of them occurring cannot be calculated even in the billions. The existence of these facts cannot therefore be reconciled with any of the laws of chance… A review of the wonders of nature demonstrates beyond question that there are design and purpose in it all. A program is being carried out in all of its infinite detail by the supreme being we call God.”

“The fool says in his heart, there is no God”

Rejecting the evidence for the existence of God is not a new thing upon the earth. To the Romans Paul wrote, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20.) The invisible things, such as the Godhead, should be understood by the things that are made, the creation. Those who reject this evidence are without excuse.

Not only does God’s works show forth his glory, power and wisdom, but also God’s word. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6.) “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1.) May all of us have a stronger faith in the existence of God: knowing that we must stand before him and give an account for all our actions?  Copyright © 2006 All Rights Reserved
